SIR MARK TULLY had a very distinguished career as BBC correspondent for South Asia for 25 years. With a vast knowledge of and respect for Indian culture he has written a number of books on the subject. His understanding of all things Indian did not happen by accident. Mark Tully was born in Calcutta in 1936. The son of a wealthy accountant, he was brought up by a strict European coming to Britain when he was ten. He joined the BBC and became correspondent, moving to Delhi 1964. Mark Tulley’s pieces painted pictures of the reality behind the headlines and the effect of war, poverty and disease on ordinary people. He was made an Officer of The Order of the British Empire in 1985 and was awarded the Padma Shree in 1992, a rare distinction for a non-Indian. He was knighted in the 2002 New Year Honours. In 2005 he received the Padma Bhushan. |
